Believe it or Not, Hamlet Within Chennai City Gets Power for the 1st time in 30 Years

There would be light in nearly 50 households in Uppukaramedu in Ambattur for the first time in 30 years. The solar-power connection to the households has been possible largely because of the efforts of Grand Lodge of India (GLI), a social organization that came forward to set up solar panels in their hamlet at a cost of Rs 5.5 lakh following a report carried in Deccan Chronicle.

The organisation had set up 800 Kva capacity solar panels to supply power to 46 houses and to install six streetlights. All the houses has been provided with a light bulb and a plug point to charge their mobiles, said Dr Balaraman Biswakumar of GLI. Biswakumar said that this is the 90th hamlet to be covered under their Jyotirgamaya project of providing solar lights to remote villages all over India that do not have electric power.
