A child worker of North Chennai is packing his bags to go to America for specialising in media studies. Mohammed Sherief, now 21, had migrated across all sorts of odd jobs, from carpentry to distributing marketing handbills, since he was eight, earning sometimes as low as `15 a day. Most part of his childhood went in search of one square meal a day for his family.

US real estate firms have spawned new job opportunities for TN rural women. Thanks to their outsourced projects on maintenance service billing and invoice processing, Indian KPO (knowledge processing outsourcing) companies have roped in rural women for the job that does not call for niche skill sets. Companies such as Episource, a KPO firm headquartered in the US, has opened new avenues to graduate women in areas such as Jolarpet, Koundapadi and Villivakkam to eke out a living of their own. In association with women self-help groups, the company has helped women in these rural areas to set up small brick-and-mortar centres to do some processing work for the company.
