Tawa 9 Mandaveli – Affordable Vegetarian Food in Chennai
We heard few of our friends talk about Tawa 9 in Mandaveli and decided to check it out. Located near the State bank of India branch of Venkata Krishnan Road (Near Mandaveli Bus Stand), Tawa 9 is a decent vegetarian restaurant. We met the owner Maitri and got to know her recommended items to try it out. We were a mixed group of South Indian and North Indian / Continental food lovers and this place had items to cater to our various needs. We were there at lunch time and we saw Tamilnadu and North Indian meals available.
Light House in Chennai is Now Open to Public
The Light House in Santhome has reopened to the public. Union minister for shipping and ports, G K Vasan did the formal launch this morning and let guests have the first ride to the top and get a great view of the sea, the beach and the San Thome and Mylapore neighbourhoods.
A brand new lift takes you to the top and you get to take the scenes in from the gallery which has been gated so that people do not jump off it or cause an accident. Visits are regulated and kept short since the access to the gallery space via staircase is narrow.
There is also a smart and small museum at the rear which showcases all the instruments used in lighthouses down the ages, including two ‘live’ lights.

Know our Divine Sri Ramakrishna Mutt, Mylapore
Like to spend time to meditate or have a pleasant early morning walk in the gardens? This is the ultimate relaxation place you can find in and around Chennai. It is a very quite place, where people are not allowed to even speak at meditating hours. The Universal Temple of Sri Ramakrishna located within the premises of the Ramakrishna Mutt in Mylapore is a standing monument dedicated to Sri Ramakrishna, a symbol of Universal Religion. The temple’s architecture blends with the traditional South Indian Temple architecture.
At the centre of the shrine is a 7 feet tall statue of Sri Ramakrishna. Carved out of pure marble, it depicts the image of Sri Ramakrishna, seated on a marble lotus. It also houses shrines for Sri Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda. The main entrance presents a magnificent view with its structure built on traditional Dravidian architecture.

Fat or No Fat, Ghee Matters
Ganapathy’s Butter and Ghee, is a Mylapore landmark that opened in 1942.
Many Chennai traditionalists buy their butter and ghee only from here, something most of them have been doing for the last three generations. As the enthusiastic shop boy takes the lid off a comfortingly dented tin to scoop out a creamy pat of white buffalo butter for a customer, G. Sankaran, the owner of the store explains why they stubbornly resist change.
“The butter has been coming from Uthukuli, in Erode district, ever since my father, Ganapathy Pillai, started this business,” he says, adding that they even use the same supplier his father did. Sankaran’s son S. Saravanan adds that the dairy merchant too has been doing the same business since his grandfather’s time, so the flavour doesn’t change.”
