Lost in a new area and looking for the right buses to get you home? Need info regarding bus, train or flight ticket availability? Help is at hand, literally. Thanks to a new initiative by two young entrepreneurs, Routes is a new dial-up service in the city wherein callers can get their local travel queries answered free-of-cost.
Apart from information on Chennai city routes, bus numbers and local train timings, Routes will give details on timings, rates and seat availability of inter-city buses, trains and domestic flights; just dial 86 95 95 95 95.
Four hundred more gleaming new, environment-friendly buses will be added to the fleet of the state transport corporation (STC) in a few weeks. Also, new buses will run on 189 new routes. With this, the combined fleet strength of the eight transport corporations is cruising ahead to reach the 20,000 mark, fulfilling the promise made by the government in the Assembly. The new buses will have ‘adjustable driver seats’ to provide comfort to the drivers according to their height and preference, as in cars.
Soon students from far off Madharpakkam town, bordering Andhra Pradesh, will be able to travel to Chennai using free bus pass. Thetransport department is contemplating extending the reach of the city’s public transport provider (MTC) services to several towns, including Ponneri, Tiruvallur, and Arani in neighbouring Tiruvallur district. MTC will also operate buses from Tambaram to Chengalpet and Sriperumbudur.
