Acclaimed Chef Mauro Ferrari on a trip to Milan came across Black truffle in the market and decided to bring it back to Chennai. Chef Mauro loves Chennai and wanted to give us the taste of Black truffle in his own creations through the Return of the Drama Chef happening at Focaccia till October 22. For the Chennai food lovers, Truffle is connected to pastries, that’s where we have heard this term often. Truffles are expensive edible mushrooms existing in two major categories Black and white – Can you believe that? Black truffle is one of the costliest and finest of the truffles. Truffle tastes as a mushroom and it was the hero of the dishes by the expert chef Mauro Ferrari.
We are a family of foodies and when we got the opportunity to do a restaurant review for RnMOnAskMe which I interpreted as Restaurant Majors On Ask Me, I immediately got onto the job to identify the restaurant using the Askme app I installed on my smartphone. It is not an easy task given my preference for vegetarian food and this time I was looking for Italian cuisine. I searched through the app and landed up with a number of entries (never knew so many Italian restaurants in Chennai) and we set our eyes on Jalpaan for their innovative combination of cuisines. Normal combinations we see in restaurants are Texan – Mexican, Italian, North Indian South Indian, Chinese cuisines. This restaurant had a unique combination of Italian, North Indian vegetarian food. Decided to try it out and checked out the locations and there was one nearby at Adyar, Chennai. Checked out Google and saw that the restaurant was closed on Saturdays. We were surprised because restaurants do not normally close and choosing Saturdays was much more intriguing given the business they get on weekends. We tried calling them and there was no answer and we assumed they must be closed. We are not sure if it is a regular closure or a one off occasion. So we decided to check out their restaurant in another location quite faraway from our place.
This post and activity is the witness to my transition from a traditional home-grown cook to an amateur cook ready to experiment with international dishes with a twist that so innately represents the dish yet suited to Indian palates. If this effort is not done, my garbage bucket has a huge mouth to gobble up every morsel that comes its way. I am sure I am not alone. In one of my conversation with a Chinese cook ( He is from China but living in India for quite a long time), he mentioned that the Chinese dishes we eat here is nowhere near the Original dishes and the noodles and fried rice have been ‘Indianized’ to appeal to our taste. This was a shocking revelation to me since I thought and believed that I was consuming Chinese dishes. So every foreign recipe entering India undergoes a transition to suit Indian palate and hence we see ‘Tandoori Pizza’, (Italians must try this!) and ‘Paneer Tikka Burger’ (Do Americans know this?) etc.
Osteria specialises in authentic Italian cuisine (100% vegetarian), brought to Chennai by the man behind the scene, Vineet Bokaria… from Dubai. The interiors are warm, rustic and a cozy Italian tavern look, designed by Vineet himself. The idea is to give every table a feature, and a difference to feel upon.
The chefs are from Dubai, as well, and have around 12 years experience in star hotels in this cuisine. The key feature of Osteria is that all the breads and pastas are made in-house with Italian equipments. They are as fresh as ever (which none of the Chennai restaurants of this category can claim so). Cheeses and oils are imported, which enhances the authenticity of the taste.
