Know Hidden Hunger, Micro-nutrient Deficiency Affecting Children

Hunger need not be explained. Every one of us experience it. What do you do when you are hungry? Eat food. Is any food sufficient to satiate hunger? The answer to this question is a tricky one. Satiating the feeling of hunger and body needs unfortunately has become two different terms and has given rise to a new term called “hidden hunger”. What is Hidden Hunger?  Hidden hunger, also known as micro-nutrient deficiencies, is a form of under-nutrition that occurs when intake and absorption of vitamins and minerals (such as zinc, iodine, and iron) are too low to sustain good health and development.


We are aware of the term “nutrients” but what are micro-nutrients? Micro-nutrients are a group of nutrients which are required in trace amounts for normal growth and development. So, small is big because this deficiency can grow to produce irreversible damage if left unattended.  And the worst part is it affects children more. A condition we casually ignore may be the reason for stunted growth, cognitive delays, weakened immunity and infection and we end up drugging our children to cure instead of finding ways to prevent it.

nalukettuDawn breaks and our home is abuzz with ceremonial traditional Suprabatham so loud yet soothing such that everyone wakes up to it.  Our beautiful home is lit with natural light entering through the traditional windows and the sun roof on the terracotta tiles. Our expansive home extends 3 divisions in length and the whole place is filled with pleasant incense.  Getting up in the morning is refreshing and triggers a unique feeling of awakening in me. A walk to the backyard reveals the well cared for garden of guava, mango, neem, drumstick, coconut trees dotted with fragrant flower beds of jasmine, hibiscus, rose and many day and night flowers.  It is a unique experience to see those buds waiting for the respective breaks to show up their lovely faces.

Still an area people refuse to talk about or acknowledge, I saw one of my friends suffering from AIDS die a silent death for no fault of hers. She led a humiliated, ostracized life shunned by family deprived of support, refusing help from friends and suffering all alone wishing for earlier death as a boon.

Life is so fast paced that we lose track of time and also we have made our day complex that we do not find time to attend to our health and wellness. Last year checkup doctor advised walking and low salt diet to make sure BP is under control.



It was much easier to implement the low salt diet though there were demands for extra salt initially but soon it has become part of our diet. Walking did not find the daylight at all as we kept discussing about the ideal time and the area to walk as our place was abuzz with heavy traffic always. Discussion kept on till it was finally shelved and forgotten.
