December season is here in Chennai and all the sabhas are buzzing with activity. Halls are filled with active saree clad women competing with enthusiastic dhoti clad men happily nodding their heads to the lovely rhythms of the who’s who of Carnatic music. This season sees the best of concerts and Sabha hopping is a common term for the rasikas. Each one carries a small handbook, a reckoner for the songs being sung with details of raga, tala and the composer. The young ones are much more adept, googling the song as soon as they hear it. Music season, December music festival or Margazhi Utsavam as its fondly called is a season of celebration of music in Chennai. All sabhas run their itinerary one after the other or parallel to give in the feast of music and dance not only to Chennai people but for people who make it a point to visit here during this time hailing from different parts of India and abroad. Sabha hopping is one of the activity so dearly associated with this phenomenon which means moving from one sabha to another to attend different concerts.

Madras Music Season is an event hosted every December–January in the present-day south Indian metropol of Chennai. Spanning some six weeks, a number of large and small kutcheris (Carnatic music concerts) are performed by highly competent musicians. The traditional role of the Music Season is to allow aficionados of Carnatic music to appreciate performances by renowned artists, and to allow promising young artists to display their talent and skill. Audiences and artists come from across India and from the international Indian diaspora to be part of the event. The Music Season has grown over the years, and has been described as one of the world’s largest cultural events.
