Celebrations have found a new meaning in our lives. Social life is at its active best and connecting and communicating with friends and relatives has become easy. It is a sea change in the behavioral patterns from yesteryears when connectivity was an issue. Looking at things today, it makes us feel that life was much more serious and less fun those days. Today children are much more youthful and more magnanimous in celebrating life. It is never too late to get into the bandwagon. It is mostly a surprise visit to the friend’s home or at a common place or a restaurant to celebrate birthdays or weddings or anniversaries. Whatever be the plan of celebration, our basic item is a huge cake we so carefully select based on the occasion. Cake shops today has reinvented themselves and we now have a great variety of Birthday cakes, wedding cakes and even photo cakes in Chennai.
Jewelry has always been an accessory woman love today and in olden times. The only difference is that uber women see it more as an statement than investment and is particular about the way it looks and the way it adds to their personality. Jewelry brands have taken efforts to innovate to bring the joy of ownership to the owners of their designer products. It is a huge challenge to cater to the varied tastes of the 21st generation women and it is quite interesting to see how brands especially CaratLane offers jewelry to attract the current generation.
Who does not want that extra money we make out of unused things? Come the 1st week, our regular wastepaper mart man comes in a cycle to pick up those newspapers, magazines, plastics, corrugated boxes and the recyclable materials we have carefully collected over the month. We make less than 100 rupees in the process but that is vital in keeping our home clutter free and gets us extra money. But what happens to the e-waste? Laptops and mobiles are the part of our daily lifestyle. Every person in the household holds a mobile and depending on the age group they are in, mobiles are changed as frequently as 6 months to 3 years. We would like to keep it for more time, we know the value of money but the frequent updates to the operating system makes sure that the mobile stops responding to you in due course. This happens even when we carefully maintain it with cover or put a monkey cap where only a tiny part of the mobile is seen.
Some of the mobile phone brands are accepted in exchange offers when we buy the new one but these mobiles come with a good price tag during purchase and have its own set of terms and conditions. Exchange becomes compulsory because we do not want so many mobiles lying around in the house and most of the times, we end up giving it off at meagre price. There are the other mobiles which the sales people push to you and those coveted ones we bought at rock bottom prices in Billion-day sale or at the great Indian festival which do not find a place in the exchangeable list.
The world has shrunk and it has become quite common to see parents sending off children abroad for studies. Many things occupy the thoughts of parents right from the environment, academics, living conditions and the list can go on and on. The other concept much talked about in recent times is home schooling. As a parent, when I thought about home schooling, my first thoughts were on the acceptance of my daughter in reputed colleges post her schooling and her social exposure. I was on the lookout for virtual school addressing my concerns in India. Virtual school can be a great asset for children pursuing sports and arts as a career. It can be a boon to children who have missed their school admission cycle and specifically for children with learning differences who are highly gifted or students for whom mobility is limited due to physical disabilities or those who have Attention Deficit Disorder and other special needs. It is a marriage of technology and academic excellence to bring virtual schooling home. Technology evolution has paved the way and time for parents looking for home schooling to rejoice. Pearson, the world’s leading learning company, launched first-of-its-kind Virtual International K–12 Education in India with International Connections Academy (iNaCA). Bringing accredited U.S. education directly to your desktop, the iNaCA provides a flexible world-class curriculum for students studying in classes up to class 12.
Health issues weren’t much those days when we were young. Probably we can attribute it to clean air, nature friendly living and health conscious routines. A recent visit to my doctor made me come across a new type of ailment affecting people and she names it as lifestyle disease. Seeing me quite surprised by the term, she explained that it is quite prevalent among people these days, reasons being exposure to pollution and change in lifestyle. Allergic Rhinitis, Asthma, Wheezing have become a common occurrence among children in almost every household. Doctors attribute it to air pollution or the presence of unwanted things in the air we breathe which creates short term and long term impacts on our wellbeing. To a short survey on the topic with few friends of mine to know if we have any control over it, majority of the people answered a Big No. Their answer hovered around their incapacity to control vehicles emitting smoke or cigarette smoking in public and those burning trash in public spaces. Is that all? Is air pollution restricted only to outdoors? What about interiors? Is the air we breathe inside our home free from pollution? Most of them agreed that the air inside our homes are cleaner than outdoors. Sadly, in comparison, our homes are 5X times more polluted than outdoors. Our homes DO contribute a lot towards air pollution. It is a shocking piece of information but nevertheless true.
Travel has now become a part of our regular routine. More often if you are a traveler of air-conditioned coaches in trains, it makes it easy to travel by flights instead. It saves time and efforts. This can be possible only when we know when to book our flights unlike the train system where the tickets price remains stable and the earliest booking gets a confirmed seat though we cannot commit on the seating comfort. Flights have a different algorithm and so prices vary and the rules of railways just do not apply here. How do we get the best deal in air tickets? Travel search engines such as Skyscanner are a great help in helping us in this effort. A recent survey of Indian travelers revealed 72% do not know when is the best time to book flights. A survey by Skyscanner unveiled 69% of travellers incorrectly estimate that the best air fares can be found less than 12 weeks before departure, when in fact the best deals are snapped up by travellers who plan in advance.
Home Décor is the most challenging aspect of making the space we live ours. With many shops and online sites offering products, it is a nightmare to locate the ones we want without losing the bigger picture. Many times, during my purchase spree, we have landed with items which we never want to use as it does not fit into the idea we have in our mind. On contemplation, we understood the mismatch between the sellers and buyer’s mindset. We arrive at a theme and look around to buy things that match but the sellers are only selling products. This makes a big difference, be it furniture, furnishing or other household items, either offline or online. It has been overwhelming at times since it involves substantial investment of money, time and effort. This is when I stumbled across an online site, Home Canvas, a platform that curates furniture and home decor products from stores, suppliers and artisans from all over the country.
Hair problems do not end with crowning glory and extends beyond. Hair is wanted and unwanted and it all depends on its location. Imagine a quick call from a friend in the last minute to have fun; it can be an invite from friends, a fun party, and a smoothie with your crush. The first thing that comes to a mind is the time we went for our last shave and the possibility of stubble. All the enthusiasm wanes away and the invitations are no more inviting. Epilators have come a long way and the leader is Braun epilators, researching and specializing on getting silky smooth skin at a moment’s notice!
Cars are no more a luxury in India now. The challenge in maintaining a car lies in regular service and interiors. After all, we spend a lot of time travelling in a closed air conditioned car. And if you are the kind of person with motion sickness, the smell of diesel can be quite a challenge to manage. To add to it, we have leather seats and what not. Just getting into an ill maintained car is enough to spoil the day for us. With the cabs service picking up big away in Chennai, maintenance has become one of the key factors to get those star ratings from the customers. Car perfumes have a great role to play in keeping the vehicle drive worthy. Though many car fresheners have come into the market, many simply adopt the room freshener style which lasts for an hour and we are back to square one. What we need is a car freshener that keeps the fragrance constant.
Winter is in and this spells onset of mosquitoes. It is a known fact that mosquitoes are vectors responsible for many diseases. As always prevention is better than cure and it is important for us to take necessary steps to secure us from potential mosquito bites. Immunity is a major factor in keeping away seasonal diseases communicated by various medium. When we talk about immunity, babies and children are the most susceptible and as a parent every one of us know how difficult it is to control them and keep them away from places where mosquitoes breed. The next aspect of immunity is allergic reactions. Today, allergies are the cause of many respiratory associated infections and so we hear ‘natural’ being chanted everywhere and in each item we purchase. It is not that everyone is allergic to chemicals but we can say that there is a formidable population in that area too.
A group of bloggers, including me, were invited for the So Chennai & Sensodyne Food Walk here in Chennai. Needless to say, I grabbed the offer and set out for the great food-adventure!
The concept at hand was that a few bloggers and actual tooth sensitivity sufferers, who had been using Sensodyne for a number of months, would get to go on a food walk, sampling food and drinks without the fear of any sensitivity.
Here is a description of our food-adventure experience at three popular eateries in Chennai.
Millets is the new age food and we can confirm it with the number of restaurants offering millet based food aka healthy food. Healthy food is not something we want to eat once in a while and to make it regular, it must be prepared at home. This was one area which we were not familiar with as we belong to the city bred crowd. So we ended up hunting for such food and brought home ready to cook powders with which we can prepare dosai or adai. The problem with the powder is the dryness we get when preparing dosa or adai. It is manageable if we eat it immediately and how much ever we soak the powder, there is that hard feel in the end product. This is when we came across Gomathy Mami’s home batter and had the opportunity to try out 6 different batters –
Brown Rice Dosai , Multi grain Adai , Bajra (Kambu) Dosai, Horse gram (Kollu) Dosai, Ragi (Kezhviragu) Dosai, Regular Rice based Dosa / Idly and Paruppu Adai from them. I must say I am more than happy with the product in the pricing, quality and taste. Here is our experience –
