Food Review – Mylai Mami Samayal Food Festival at Regenta Deccan

unnamed (1)

Should food festivals revolve only around continental cuisine……? No not necessary proved the recent food experience at Regenta Central Deccan’s Olives restaurant where Chef Arun and Kumbakonam Mrs. Prema Nambiraj ( Kumbakonam Prema mami) presented us with vegetarian nostalgic delights as a part of the Mylai Mami Samayal festival. The festival is on till May 6th – more details at the end of the review.

The immediate thought that came into our head was that of a relief that Chennai does celebrate its own cuisine with pomp and show. Very often, we face situations where people from outside Tamilnadu visit Chennai and request us to give them the option to have local food in home style. It was always a tough call and we end up hosting them in friends’ places. Regenta Deccan must be applauded for bringing in Mrs. Prema from Kumbakonam for this festival.

Prive Restaurant, Kilpauk – Vegetarian Food Review

This post is going to be one awesome experience of pure vegetarian food that spanned multi cuisines and each one outperformed the other. Few of the dishes were exemplary in comparison to the others, but overall it was a lovely culinary journey for us.  Most of us know Prive restaurant located opposite to Citi center and this is their new restaurant at Kilpauk at Waddels road. Located in first floor, it is quite spacious to host groups also. New inclusion in the menu includes Mexican dishes, Italian dishes and North Indian food. We had a full course dinner starting from Soups, starters, main course and desserts.

Mexican food was absolutely yummy. Spinach quesadilla and cottage cheese, Mexican Lasagna, Nachos with Cheese sauce, Mexican Varderashvardesh were the hot picks.

Kaidi Kitchen Introduces New Big Menu

Themed restaurants improvise eating experience and breaks the monotony of the dining environment. Kaidi Kitchen (Jail Samayalarai), a multicuisine vegetarian restaurant is focused on giving you an experience of being inside a jail. There are cells and the service team is all dressed up in uniforms and the décor suits the theme. We visited the restaurant to experience the new big menu introduced by the restaurant. Primarily, the food and variety were excellent.  We had a full course meal beginning with the Mongolian rice soup and ending it with a baked rasogolla and sizzling brownie icecream.

Food Review – Asian Aroma at Chetpet

30cb32b8-5811-4872-bb3a-1da6a3dc00f3Asian Aroma is an Asian Vegetarian restaurant where we had specialty Asian dishes including rotis, and choice of north Indian subjis.  The term Asian somehow rings Chinese to us and though they had mouth watering Chinese dishes, it was the Roti and Tawa Paneer along with Paneer Tikka that stole the show. It is located on Mayor Ramanathan Road in Chetpet closer to the Eco Park.

We went there for a review and the food was interesting and being a vegetarian, a place serving only vegetarian food is a big plus. Asian food and vegetarian, we do not have a lot of options. So vegetarians out there, this is a nice place to try out different cuisines that includes Indian food too.

Black Truffle Magic at Hyatt Regency in the Return of the Drama Chef

04a0be12-639e-4ad8-ac57-2350a16d054eAcclaimed Chef Mauro Ferrari on a trip to Milan came across Black truffle in the market and decided to bring it back to Chennai. Chef Mauro loves Chennai and wanted to give us the taste of Black truffle in his own creations through the Return of the Drama Chef happening at Focaccia till October 22. For the Chennai food lovers, Truffle is connected to pastries, that’s where we have heard this term often. Truffles are expensive edible mushrooms existing in two major categories Black and white – Can you believe that?  Black truffle is one of the costliest and finest of the truffles. Truffle tastes as a mushroom and it was the hero of the dishes by the expert chef Mauro Ferrari.

Velachery Food Review: Wai Wai City Noodle Bar at Highway Food Street

Hangouts is the common term narrated by the youth today and many parents must be aware of it.  To me, when my daughter says hangout, it means my purse is going to weigh a lot lighter soon. But the necessity of it could not be overlooked because friends move in different directions after school and the close-knit group wait for common holidays to meet each other and the enthusiasm is contagious. If it is just a small group, they do meet at home but then it is not all that comfy for them and if the group is slightly bigger then they start looking out for places where they can eat and spend time together. Youngsters have limitations with their pocket money and many times they are forced to find a place to meet and greet because they have no other option but to spend more.

Today’s visit to the Wai Wai City Noodle Bar in Highway Food Street on 100 feet road made it clear that it is a blessing for these children. It is value for money good quality food in an air-conditioned environment in a central easy to reach location, with all the Ts of a real hangout place. This is the first quick serve restaurant of Wai Wai City Noodle bar in Tamilnadu.  A decent menu certainly not the tiring book of items, but has starters, main course, beverages, and a dessert. In starters, we have both veg and non-veg options. In noodles, Vegetarians have an edge here as non-veg items are an add-on.  If you believe in your culinary expertise, you can also choose to prepare your own noodles.

Pakwan Restaurant, A Vegetarians Delight

Pakwan, a vegetarian restaurant in TNagar, Chennai celebrated the first anniversary of their operations along with the launch of their new menu which boasts of an array of interesting dishes.  We were invited to be the part of the celebrations and taste the new menu. It was fun with games and food, and we enjoyed the lovely preparations and the ambience, a special mention to the mocktails we were floored with in the process.

This has been our first visit to the place even though it came up many times earlier. The new menu carries Asparagus risotto with almonds, and to the Masterchef fans out there, it would not sound new. Based out of rice, it was a queer dish for a South Indian but yet delicately interesting and we liked it.

Vegetarian Food Review of Maplai Restaurant, Neelangarai, Chennai

bbac2e26-76ec-477c-9cd1-29ba2bb3d6de

Maplai restaurant is quite popular for their virundhu (feast) and their curated selection of dishes from the Tamilnadu, Kerala and Karnataka region centric cuisine.  Right now, Maplai is celebrating Andhra Pradesh food festival during the month of July 2017.  The Neelangarai unit is new but we could see a good footfall on the Friday we were there.  We arrived early and was well received by Mr. Vinu Shankar, Marketing Manager of the establishment. It was interesting insight onto the process and the honesty in claiming their approach to being near to the authenticity of the dishes to the traditional way of making it.  We arrived early and hence could not participate in the virundhu (feast) but did partake various items in the menu.

Punjab Grill Introduces Heirloom Recipes in Phoenix Mall’s Culinary Quest 2017

23301bd9-178f-49a0-88e7-06a3069ecd85Phoenix Market City (Phoenix mall), Chennai is celebrating its 2017 edition of Culinary Quest through the month of July. The specialty of this food festival is the introduction of new items in the menu by participating restaurants and a 15% discount on the bill, a bonus at the time we are facing the brunt of GST in our food bills. We visited the Punjab Grill, a participating restaurant to check out the offering for the culinary quest.

Punjab Grill has always been specializing on Punjabi food and justifies its contribution to the food lovers with its quality and service. It was something to look forward to when we came to know that Punjab Grill is working on bringing heirloom recipes for the Culinary Quest this time. We love such food festivals happening occasionally because it makes the restaurant expand its menu and embark on identifying food that lies hidden in our age old culinary treasure. As a foodie, it gives me immense pleasure to see new items being offered to beat that familiarity with the food in their menu but it is no ordinary task to go in search of heirloom recipes and bring it onto our table with the perfection to make sure we enjoy it. Thanks to Punjab Grill Chef team, it was a job well done and we enjoyed the food at its best.

Dialogue in the Dark – An Eye Opening Experience

BLACKDark! The word has been associated with color, absence of light and with thing eerie. But to many, it is the way they see the world. Do we really know what it is to be in dark? Not the dark we think of when we do not have sufficient information about a subject, the REAL Darkness. It will be an interesting question to answer since darkness in real is never experienced by many of us, not even in the night. Pitch darkness has literally existed only in thrillers for me. This realization dawned on me when I visited “Dialogue in the Dark” in Express Avenue Mall, Royapettah, Chennai. It is located on the other end of Food Court.  Wondering what is “Dialogue in the Dark”?
