Axpress BBQ – OMR Chennai Vegetarian Food Review
BBQ is the in thing in today’s restaurant scene and few major players are Absolute Barbeques, Barbeque Nation, Coal Barbeques and it is a Buffet available with Vegetarian and Non-vegetarian menu items. The challenge in visiting this restaurant as a family is our inability to do justice to the large menu and a Rs.700 plus and minus per person price tag. This has prevented us from visiting this restaurant often much to the disappointment of the youth gang in our family. We got this issue addressed finally when we visited Axpress BBQ located in Karapakkam (Opposite to TCS) with its a la carte offering. Another plus is it is a Quick Serve Restaurant (QSR) and has an interesting menu on cards. The ambience is vibrant and a flash mob now n then adds to the enthusiasm of the crowd. Contributing to the Go Green initiative, disposable paper containers and plates are used to serve food, we leave the restaurant with a gift box with seeds to make our home green. The moment we go in, we are greeted with a welcome drink, dhaniya Shorbet, light and an appetizer in soup form.
The menu carries starters, combos, desserts, rolls, sateys and burgers. We found it a bit difficult to identify the vegetarian ones as they were not identified separately. We suggested that they add a distinct identifier which was received by them positively. The choice of vegetarian items is less compared to the large non-vegetarian collection. Axpress BBQ has day specials and Noodle spring roll and Falafel was on the menu the day we visited. Noodle Spring Roll was amazing and can be called the Dish of the day for us. Falafel had a right combination of filling but the cover was more of a roti than the original Falafel. The chutney or the sauce that accompanied these were top notch, added a zing to the dishes. Do not miss it.
The next in the line was the BBQ Paneer-BBQ Mushroom-BBQ corn-Crispy Corn-Cajun Spice Potato-Salad.
BBQ Paneer first time had a raw marination issue which was promptly replaced with a succulent well marinated paneer. BBQ mushroom was awesome, Crispy corn was good, though would have preferred a bit more crunch and Cajun spice potato with the potato skin is a personal choice, I loved it but cannot say the same with others. The salad is pickled lettuce, well not a salad we expected 🙂
The USP of this BBQ restaurant is the pricing, the platter we had was Rs.290 with 4 servings of each. Main course comes as combos with masala rice and Kulcha. Also, we can ask for the spices to be added according to our taste.
Makes a lot more sense for group eat togethers, absolute value for money. Do not miss to use their sauces and powders – If you are a Piri Piri fan, Plain French fries with Piri Piri powder is a must try.
Their specialty dessert is on the cloud. Do try their Cloud icecream – cotton candy with softy icecream on the top. Quite unique in presentation, it is a favorite among youngsters. They have goli soda in lime and orange flavors and Pan ice cream (my personal favorite)
It is a hangout place where BBQ items get served quickly, value for money proposition in terms of quantity and price and a lovely friendly atmosphere. They do make Birthdays special. Do connect with them for it. A welcome addition for the OMR and ECR residents.
Non-vegetarian foodies do check their Volcanic chicken for sure, we found about it seeing it served in a unique fashion.
