Food Review : Taste of Madras at YMCA Grounds, Perungudi (OMR)

329dfa97-2d9e-41c3-8b23-0e1db999dab3Taste of Madras , an event by PS events with Krishna Sweets and  Desi Arena is happening at YMCA grounds, Rajiv Gandhi Salai, (OMR)  just opposite Maruti Suzuki Service Centre. Parking available in abundance.  Here is our review of the event for those who wish to visit it tomorrow.  The event is free but requires registration.  We could see lot of chairs and tables to sit and eat and for those cricket lovers who do not want to miss the IPL action, there is a huge LED screen showing the match.

There are stalls for Chinese, Burmese and Thai food but we saw it was predominantly non-vegetarian but Wangs  (Chinese) has both Veg and Non-veg options. We tested the Veg Momo and it was yummy at Rs. 20 each.  We skipped the Burmese and Thai food stalls.   Flubbers, the jelly pudding has come out with instant Oats, tea and coffee.

For those in love with diet conscious food, there is a natural food counter selling great varieties of village food and yes, the stall was crowded as they were also selling the raw materials.

Chats stalls were interspersed but we loved the tail end section where we have the Kilpauk Chaat wala counter. A chance for those loving the Khakra sandwich and Murukku sandwich to have a go.  We tried the Khakra sandwich (Rs.80) and it was Yummy and addictive.  The only restraint was the full tummy which could not allow anything more.

The tail end counters has 2 enthusiastic women churning out kuzhi paniyaram and vella paniyaram and Paruththi Paal.  Her counter was overcrowded too.  Kuzhi Paniyaram at Rs.30 a plate (4 solid pieces was a steal).

Coming to the desserts section, we tried out the tender coconut pannacota by The Bake shop( fresh entry into Chennai market)  and Brownie heaven with their new introductions Doughnie and Chunkie. Doughnie is chocolate cookie covering a brownie. It is nice to see innovations to keep the interest on the desserts ON.  Krispy Crème was there and had an offer of buy 2 get 1 free. Keep hearing the announcements as offers keep coming  as we are there.

We tried the Nutella Chocolate Oreo Jar by Indulge by InnerChef, home bakers & chef was simply awesome. We are so happy to see the home bakers hitting the market and simply loved their offerings be it Irish Coffee Cheesecake at Rs.135, Oreo Walnut Brownie at Rs. 100 and Tiramisu Jar at Rs. 250.  Check them out at

The next area is the beverages section and the first one we tried out was the Tea Trails with their café at Ashok Nagar.  We tried out the Cranberry Ice Tea (cold) and Adhrak Tea (Hot) and both lived up to the expectations. We were invited by them to the outlet to check out nearly 43 different types of teas and we will visit and do a detailed post later.  They have a limited collection here and it is worth a test out for tea lovers.

For coffee lovers, we have Vivekananda Coffee house and there were stalls selling mocktails – Seasonal for you gets you mocktails according to the season. There are stalls selling juices, Bovonto, and Panneer soda.

Few apps have also set up stalls prominent being Food Palette, a new app which brings home bakers and chefs products home,  Zomato and Grofers.

Fun events are being held and prizes are being handed out by Zomato to make the place lively. It is expected that few more stalls will be setup tomorrow and there is an event at 6 PM tomorrow by Asife Briyani.

Note : We had a difficult time washing our hands as the wash basins set up for the event were DRY with no water.  The stall owners were giving us water from their own arrangement.  Food events such as this should take care of this aspect. We hope the organizers make note of this point.
