Mr. Pat Farmer, Australian Marathon Running Legend Begins ‘Spirit of India Run’


Mr. Pat Farmer, Australian Marathon Runner and former MP of Australia and Parliamentary Secretary for Education, Science and Training from 2004 to 2007 began his 60 days, 4600km from south to north run from Kanyakumari to end it in Srinagar on March 30, 2016.  He is running this marathon through 10 states to raise funds for girls’ education in India through Mahindra’s Nanhi Kali Initiative.  He is running along the west coast through Kochi and Kasargod in Kerala and then through Karwar in coastal Karnataka before moving on to Goa and Maharashtra.

‘Spirit of India Run’ by Mr. Pat Farmer is supported by Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India – Public Diplomacy Division, Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), Federation of Hotels & Restaurants Association of India (FHRAI), State Tourism Departments, State Tourism Corporations etc.

The Mahindra Group is supporting Mr. Pat Farmer with Ssangyong Rexton and Mahindra Scorpio vehicles.  The Adani group is sponsoring the run in support of his initiative to support girls’ education in India.

Ministry of Tourism, Government of India has identified 16 places en-route to organize ‘Incredible India Evening’ events. In South India, these events will be organized at Kanyakumari (on 25.01.2016), Varkala (on 27.01.2016), Kochi (on 29.01.2016) and Karwar (on 07.02.2016).

Mr. Pat farmer ran from the North to the South Pole in 2011-12 and raised more than A$100,000 for Red Cross International’s clean water programs. In 2014, he ran more than 1300km in two weeks through the Middle East to raise money and awareness for peace initiatives in the region.

It is interesting to see the interest of Mr. Farmer in promoting goodwill, friendship and trade between Australia and India.  His marathon will be filmed by a crew to showcase the culture and diversity of India to Australians through the Channel 9 network and other parts of the world and will also project India as a tourism destination and more.
