It is Christmas time and we are gearing up to celebrate Xmas in our own terms. Chennai has shown resurgence is in our blood and Chennaites and Businesses in Chennai, especially Hot Breads show it in their own way by making this celebration a way to Share and Care for Chennai. The more we buy for them, the more we donate to building Chennai. So people, no qualms about buying those specialties unique to Xmas offered by them. It is also the time of the year where giving is pleasure and why not we buy and share it to show we care. So what is in for Christmas this season from Hot Breads? We are also sharing a little about Don Pepe a Mexican restaurant serving authentic Mexican food for the past 15 years. We tried out the vegetarian options only.

Hot Bread’s exclusives include Plum cake, premium plum cake, mince pie, stolen bread, Dundee cake, and walnut cake. What we loved about the plum cake is its aroma wafting over the entire place triggering a feeling of expectation as we entered the Hot breads location at Cathedral Road, Chennai. The specialty of the Plum cake was explained by the Hot Breads team – Chef Sundar leading this team with right from beginning with Hot Breads experience.

The Plum cake ingredients, raisins, plums are cured in Rum for 6 months before including it in the cake. So it is a product available only during Xmas. It has also another premium version where curing is done for longer and has some rich ingredients such as honey, dates, butter etc. It is available in 500gms and 1 kilo tins. We had the basic version and it boasted of real ingredients and not powdery confirming the presence of cured fruits making it soft and tasty. A must try for plum cake lovers! If you are the eggless kind, they do have eggless plum cakes too.

We also tried out the mince pie which is actually fruit mince pie. Well, an item we should try on an empty stomach, it turned to be heavy and a bit too sweet for our palate. Maybe we can blame it on the pastries we had before trying this out.

Dundee and walnut cakes were good too, but the highlight to us was the mousse. We had Cappuccino mousse and chocolate mousse. My personal preference is the Cappuccino for its light, sweet salty presentation much better than the versions we had before. The biscuit was crusty and made good with the mousse. It is easy to grab more than 1 if you love Cappuccino and Mousse. Chocolate mousse was a winner among youngsters though personally I was not comfortable with the grainy texture of it depriving me of the creamy smooth feel in the mouth.

HotBreads has their fast food menu of burgers, pizzas, sandwich, and beverages and so it is more a fast food joint than simply bakers as we assumed it was. We ate Neopolitan Pizza and the bread was soft and rich – forget those extra calories and dieting for some time and INDULGE!

Now another PLUS factor is the Don Pepe Mexican restaurant led by Chef Vasu. A generous menu of Nachos, Quesadilla, Enchilada, Mexican food lovers can certainly give it a try. We tried out the cheesy Nachos and it was good. Surprised at the super thin nachos contrary to our general experience with it as a bit thick and less crispy; we enjoyed the wafer thin cheesy nachos in a traditional Mexican style soaking the creamy cheese sauce. We loved the fact that there was No making it Indian here.

On the beverages side, we tested out Pina Colada and Virgin Mary (non-alcoholic drinks) and it was real good and lived to its name.
