Chickmagalur, meaning ‘Town of the younger daughter’, is a beautiful town located in the foothills of Bababudangiri range. The town is known for its coffee and tea estates. The scenic hill station of Kemmannugundi is about two hours away from Chickmagalur. In the early 1980’s, Indira Gandhi contested for elections from Chickmagalur and won by a huge margin. It was then that the town gained popularity. Hiremagalur, meaning ‘Town of the elder daughter’, is about 5 kms away from Chickmagalur. This village boast of a unique temple of Lord Rama.It is common folklore that when Parashurama met Lord Rama he asked to see him in the pose when he got married to Sita Thus, it is said that the temple at Hiremagalur has the positions of Lakshmana and Sita interchanged.
This Picturesque hill station is located 56 kms from town. It’s named after the Mysore King, Krishnaraja Wodyer IV, who made it his favorite summer camp.
|Mullayanagiri: Mullayanagiri is part of the Baba Budan Giri Hill Ranges here. It stands 1930 meters tall and is the tallest peak in Karnataka. Its height is famous mostly for watching sunsets from. It is 16 km from Chikmagalur town. Driving to Mullayanagiri is worth taking a risk. On the way is Sitalayanagiri where the water in the Shiva temple neither increases nor decreases. The road to Mullayanagiri is very narrow with a views from steep cliffs. Driving to the peak is not possible and includes a trek up the hill from the half way point. From the topmost point of the hill the Arabian Sea is visible on clear days. The small hillock in the temple compound is the highest point in Karnataka. It is a great trekking spot in Karnataka.
130 kms to the west, on the banks of River Tunga, legend tells that Sringeri was discovered by Shri Shankaracharya as a spiritual place where natural animosity didn’t exist.
|Baba Budan Giri (Datta Peeta):To the north of Chikmagalur town is the Baba Budan Giri Range or Chandra Drona Parvatha as it was known in the ancient times, which has one of the highest mountain peaks between the Himalayas and the Nilgiris. The peak takes its name from the Muslim saint, Baba Budan, who resided here more than 150 years ago.

|Hanumana Gundi Falls
Located 32 km. from the Kalasa, the waterfall has water falling on to Natural rock formations from a height of more than 100 feet (30 m).
67 kms from Chikmagalur, water cascades from the top of the Chandra Drona hill from a height of 45mts to flow before the Veeradhadreshwara Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Delicacy of touch, originality of design and fine features have made this temple one of the notable structures of the Hoysala period.
40 kms South of Chikmagalur, was once Dwara Samudra, the capital of the Hoysala Dynasty. Despite the city’s fall, several large Hoysala temples survive. Two temples are here covered in exquisite carvings.
Overlooking the Arabian Sea, the broad hills are chained to one another with deep valley & steep precipices.
|Getting to ChikmagalurBy Road
Chikmagalur is 250km away from Bangalore, India.
On the National Highway NH 48 between Bangalore and Mangalore, take a deviation at Hassan. From Hassan, Chikmagalur is only 55km away. Chikmagalur is connected to other towns like Koppa, Sringeri, Kadur & Birur by road.
Two National Highways pass through this district:
- National Highway NH-13 (Sholapur to Mangalore) touches the towns of Koppa and Sringeri.
- National Highway NH-206 (Bangalore to Honnavar) touches the towns of Kadur, Birur and Tarikere.
- Take the Tumkur Road from Bangalore.
- At the junction before Nelmangala take a left turn into the road which goes to Hassan & Mangalore. This is NH 48.
- You will cross Kunigal, Chanrayapatna etc. (The way to Chikmagalur is also the way to Belur and Halebid.).
- On the highway towards Hassan take a right turn to get into the town of Hassan. Keep following the main road.
- Take a left and then come to Thannirhalla junction. At Thannirhalla take a right turn to Chikmagalur and go forward for another 50 km to reach the destination.
| By Rail
Chikmagalur city does not have a railway station. The closest railheads are at Birur, Kadur and Tarikere.
Chikmagalur district does not have an airport. Airports at Mangalore, Bangalore and Hubli can be used as alternatives. There are plans to develop an airport near Marle village about 10 km from the town.
Accommodation in Chikmagalur
Accommodations in Chikmagalur are plenty but you should be careful in selection. If you are looking at luxury stay then resorts are a better option as good hotels are very few. And if you are budget traveller then homestay is the best option for you. There are dozens of homestays from family experience to heritage properties.
