Know about Anemia and an Innovative Anemia Detector ToucHb
Blood is essential for life. It carries oxygen and nutrients to every part of the body. Blood also fights infections and heals injuries. Therefore, disorders of the blood largely affect overall health. Many blood diseases are congenital and are due to inherited genetic disorders. Some acquire in response to some kind of stress in the body. Blood diseases or blood disorders are sometimes referred to as different from blood-borne diseases, disorders carried in the blood. It is very important to understand the symptoms of common blood disorders and seek medical help at the right time.
Mumbai based tech entrepreneurs Dr Abhishek Sen and team is gearing up to bring their innovative anemia detector, ToucHB to the market.
Anemia: A common blood disorder, Anemia occurs due to deficiency of the red blood cells in the body. Various types of anemia are associated with deficiencies like Vitamin folate deficiency; B12 deficiency and hemolytic anemia. Anemia can cause a variety of symptoms, the most common one being easy fatigue, dizziness and shortness of breath.
Thalassemia: This blood disorder is passed down through families (inherited) in which the body makes an abnormal form of hemoglobin,i.e., the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. The disorder results in excessive destruction of red blood cells, which leads to anemia.
Nearly 10 lakh women and infants die due to anemia and its related problems around the world; the product ToucHB scores because of its portability, cheap and require no blood sample to test.
“A pregnant woman should check for anemia at least once a month. Not only it costs about `50 for the test, but also no sufficient funds and support staff in rural India to screen every pregnant woman and infants. ToucHB costs around Rs6,000 to Rs13,000, can be easily carried to every nook and corner,” says Dr Sen.
The product depends on optical technology and accurately displays haemoglobin levels on digital screens. Aren’t there similar technologies available in India? “No. Even though some US and Israeli companies make them, they are not within the reach of India,” says Dr Sen. The product will hit the market this year, he adds.
