Thinking of Moving to Cities in Search of Jobs? Think Twice, Rural Tamilnadu Joins Information Technology Highway

US real estate firms have spawned new job opportunities for TN rural women. Thanks to their outsourced projects on maintenance service billing and invoice processing, Indian KPO (knowledge processing outsourcing) companies have roped in rural women for the job that does not call for niche skill sets. Companies such as Episource, a KPO firm headquartered in the US, has opened new avenues to graduate women in areas such as Jolarpet, Koundapadi and Villivakkam to eke out a living of their own. In association with women self-help groups, the company has helped women in these rural areas to set up small brick-and-mortar centres to do some processing work for the company.

“This kind of work does not call for any specialised technical skill and hence we decided to work with women NGO groups to give a chance to women in interior areas,” said Anuradha Vasudevan, president-HR and administration of the firm. The company has employed about 30-40 women for this project of theirs. These women are offered some basic training for 15-30 days initially who then start to function independently, she added. “We have four such centers in Tamil Nadu,” said Mr Vasudevan, Managing Director of Episource India Operations.

Besides housing sector, even in its mainline of business of healthcare services, the company employs science and life sciences graduates with a predominant focus on women to do most of its medical coding work for both private and government health insurance companies in the US.

“The number of women grads studying these subjects is higher and also they seem to be keen to take up this kind of job,” said Ms Anuradha. However, this specialized job calls for basic understanding of anatomy, physiology and scientific terms and has a 3-month training, she added.

With growing opportunities in the sector, the firm is all set add 800 more employees to its current strength of 300, primarily to service its healthcare clients.
