T-shirts have been an age-old comfort wear all around the world. But have you ever wondered how old actually is the history of this particular style of clothing? T-shirt evolved through cutting the one-piece undergarments used in the 19th century into separate top and bottom garments. The top used to be long enough to tuck under the waistband of the bottoms.
However it became popular in the United States during the Spanish American war, after they were issued by the U.S. Navy. T-shirts were actually a slip-on garment without buttons or collar, usually with short sleeves and frequently a round neck line. The T-shirt became the shirt of choice for young boys because it was inexpensive, easily fitted and easily cleaned. In 1959 a type of more durable and stretchable ink was invented which allowed much more variety in T-shirt designs. In the 1960s, the ringer t-shirt appeared and became a staple fashion for youth and rock-n-rollers. The decade also saw the emergence of tie-deying and screen-printing on the basic T-shirt. Screen printed t-shirts later became very popular.
The fashion of printed t-shirt has been adored by both men and women, and by all age groups, including youth, teen, adult and elderly peoples. The most common form of print on t-shirts is screen printing. In screen-printing mesh screens, which limits the areas where ink is deposited, are used to apply water based ink on designs separated into individual colors.
Other methods of printing used for personalized t-shirts include applique, airbrush, ironing, embroidery and impressing or embossing. Laser printers are used to print on plain paper using a special toner which contains sublimation dyes that can then be permanently heat-transferred to T-shirts.
