Chill Out Chennai
Chennai registered its lowest temperature in 22 years Monday night with the mercury dipping to 16.9 degrees Celsius in Meenambakkam.
A brief winter is not new to Chennai and cold waves to Tamil Nadu interiors such as Hosur and Dharmapuri, but this year has brought an enhanced chill. As a result, citizens have started lighting bonfires and there is a rush at shops selling warm clothes. The cold wave is expected to continue for a few more days.
“We are having low temperatures over the peninsular area due to northerly winds and a strong land breeze in the night,” said Y.E.A. Raj, deputy director general of meteorology at Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre.
Meenambakkam and Nungambakkam (at 17.7 degrees Celsius) registered four degrees less than normal minimum temperature.
