Heaven of Trekking Enthusiasts

The Chennai Trekking Club (CTC), founded a couple of years ago, is a non-profit volunteer based group of trekking enthusiasts who go out exploring mountains and jungles across South India during nearly all weekends of the year. This Chennai based group has currently more than 12000 members and is rapidly growing with 500 new members each month being the largest and most active trekking community in South India (members from all over South) frequently covered in the media.

Experienced in map reading, navigation and GPS we have taken thousands of trekkers to many previously unexplored locations and discovered breath taking waterfalls, beautiful gorges, ancient forts, jeep trails hidden deep inside the jungles. The group has a large community of photographers The group has an extensive online infrastructure that automates most of its operations and one of the largest natural photo libraries of South India. CTC organizes easy treks for freshers as well as extreme survival missions for weeks without any external contact.

CTC has taken out hundreds of underprivileged children (orphans, HIV infected, …) on tens of social treks to spread social awareness amongst its members and the society and to provide the kids with an life remembering experience. CTC has a strong passion towards environmental awareness and preservation – more than 1500 members have cleaned up jungles and beaches in several massive cleanup campaigns. Recently CTC cleaned up the entire Chennai coastal line with more than 800 volunteers.

The group strongly believes in free knowledge sharing through educational workshops on a variety of related topics – map reading & navigation, photography & post-processing, snakes, trekking and camping, first aid and survival, fauna and flora and more. Early 2010, CTC organized a major trekking exhibition in Chennai to spread awareness on trekking in local, more conservative society as a more healthy and adventurous lifestyle, presented many workshops, set up a large photo exhibit showing previously unseen locations and spread environmental awareness amongst the general public. More than 1000 visitors attended the event. The group also organizes periodic senior and ladies treks.

CTC is a place where like-minded strangers come together in a open, volunteering and contributing environment – overcoming challenges together as a team, pushing oneself beyond his physical and mental limits, surviving by their own means, breeding a selfless volunteering attitude, mentoring organizational skills and come out as friends for life and recharged human beings. CTC’s trail-less treks along unexplored locations with a heterogeneous group overcoming unexpected challenges brings out the best in people. The non-profit nature of cost sharing and volunteering based organization builds an open and collaborative environment. CTC has mentored hundreds of people to become active volunteers, survivors in jungles and confident organizers.
